Did You Know?

There are three distinct types of Phu Quoc Ridgebacks, each named after the region of Phu Quoc Island where they originate. Read on to explore the unique traits of each lineage.

Phú Quốc is a Vietnamese island in the Gulf of Thailand, off the coast of Cambodia. It is renowned for its white-sand beaches and luxury resorts, primarily concentrated along the palm-fringed southwest coast. More than half of the island is part of Phú Quốc National Park, home to mountains, dense tropical jungles, hiking trails, and diverse wildlife. The largest town, Dương Đông, features bustling day and night markets selling local crafts, fresh produce, and seafood.

Facts about the island:

  • Area: 221.6 mi²

  • Max Length: 31.07 mi

  • Max Width: 15.53 mi

  • Province: Kiên Giang

  • Weather: 86°F (30°C), Wind S at 6 mph (10 km/h), 62% Humidity

Despite the island’s modest size, locals distinguish Phu Quoc Ridgebacks based on the specific regions where they are commonly found.

1. Đồng Bà Line (believed to be almost extinct)

The smallest and most agile of the three, the Đồng Bà line typically weighs around 14 kg. These dogs have short, tight fur and always alert, upright ears. Known for their high energy levels, they are rarely seen lying still and possess exceptional climbing abilities.

  • In combat or while hunting, they use a quick bite-and-release technique, which can strip an opponent’s fur and skin.

  • They specialize in targeting the opponent’s legs, making them highly strategic fighters.

2. Ba Trại Line (also referred to as Nam Đảo / Southern Island, or Cửa Cạn)

Weighing 16-18 kg, the Ba Trại line may be the most common line of Phu Quoc dogs, and shares many traits with the Bắc Đảo (Northern Island) line.

  • Some individuals have a saddleback ridge extending down to their belly, creating the illusion of a draped cloth when viewed from the side.

  • Their compact paws contribute to their high running speed.

  • They have sharper facial features compared to the Bắc Đảo line.

  • Exceptional hunters and strong swimmers, they thrive in both land and water environments.

3. Bắc Đảo Line (Northern Island)

The largest and most powerful of the three, the Bắc Đảo line can exceed 20 kg and is believed to be extinct. They often have longer fur, a broad head, and a distinctive ridge along the back of the neck, which can feel like a second skull when touched.

  • Known for their long, sharp teeth, they have notably larger canines compared to the other two lines.

  • Fearless and tenacious fighters, some individuals have a tail that stands like a battle flag, and their intense, tiger-like eyes add to their striking appearance.

  • This line is considered the most aggressive of the three.

  • They do not bite randomly but instead withstand attacks while waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

  • A single, well-placed bite from this line can sever an opponent’s throat instantly.

  • Highly brave and formidable hunters, they excel in jungle environments.

This ancient breed is known for its loyalty, intelligence, and exceptional hunting skills. Whether for protection, hunting, or companionship, the Phu Quoc Ridgeback remains one of the most remarkable dog breeds in the world.
