Did you know there are three distinct types of Phu Quoc Ridgebacks, each named after the region of Phu Quoc Island where they originate?

Let’s start with the Đồng Bà line—stay tuned to learn about the other two!

Translated from To Minh Tan, a preservationist and breed historian, who has been researching the Phu Quoc dog for over 2 decades:

Why Is the Đồng Bà Line So Rare?

The Đồng Bà is the smallest of the three Phu Quoc Ridgeback lines, typically weighing 8-12kg / 17-22 pounds (or slightly more) and standing 40-45cm / 15-18 inches at the shoulder.

  • The Suối Tiên, Suối Tranh, and Suối Dứa branches are the smallest, characterized by bamboo-segmented tails, where the dry, distinct ridges are clearly visible. (Suối means waterfall; these refer to the waterfalls on the island)

  • They often have short muzzles, broad jaws, thin ears with very little fur, and extremely short coats.

  • Their legs and bodies are compact but heavily muscled, with pronounced definition. Their tails are medium at the base, tapering evenly (like a fishing rod), and covered in extremely short fur—some even have bare spots on their chests and bellies.

This type is fast, agile, and excellent at climbing. They are also known for their clever, mischievous nature.

Why Has the Đồng Bà Line Become Rare?
  1. Larger dogs were preferred

Early on, people were more impressed by the larger, more imposing Bắc Đảo (North Island) line. The Đồng Bà’s short fur and thin ears made them less popular.

  2. Their strong personalities made them challenging

  3. Highly territorial and mischievous, they often caused chaos in packs.

  4. Frequent fighting, wandering off, food guarding, hiding others’ puppies, excessive marking, and digging put them among the most troublesome dogs.

  5. Their high energy and destructive tendencies made them difficult for busy city owners, often leading to them being rehomed.

Today, the Đồng Bà line is nearly impossible to find. If you want one, you’re out of luck—but if you’re looking for an escape artist troublemaker, there’s no shortage. A tragic fate for such a remarkable dog!
